CHEM 1407. Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry. 4 Hours. [TCCN: CHEM 1407]

Students study fundamental concepts in organic chemistry and apply these principles to explore the chemistry of nutrition and other biochemical topics, supported by a two-hour laboratory. Designed for non-science majors. Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer II. Course Equivalents: CHEM 1307
Prerequisite: CHEM 1406, CHEM 1411, or completion of a high school chemistry course.

CHEM 1411. General Chemistry I. 4 Hours. [TCCN: CHEM 1411]

Students study chemical changes and the laws governing them, including nomenclature, thermodynamics, reactions of oxygen, hydrogen, acids, bases, and salts, ionization, metathesis, the periodic table, and atomic and molecular structure. Laboratory exercises are conducted in a three-hour lab. Designed for chemistry and other science majors. Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer I.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MATH 1410, MATH 1314, MATH 1324, or MATH 2384, or equivalent math placement scores (minimum Math score of 23 on the ACT or 580 on the SAT) Course Equivalents: CHEM 1311 .

CHEM 1412. General Chemistry II. 4 Hours. [TCCN: CHEM 1412]

Students study descriptive chemistry and explore gas laws, equilibria, kinetics, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and oxidation-reduction reactions, supported by a three-hour laboratory. Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer II. Prerequisite laboratory components must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences, or student must obtain consent of the department. CHEM 2123. Organic Chemistry I: Lab. 1 Hour. [TCCN: CHEM 2123]

Students perform laboratory experiments corresponding to CHEM 2323, applying techniques and concepts from the lecture. Prerequisite laboratory components must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences, or student must obtain consent of department.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, and prior credit for or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 2323.

CHEM 2125. Organic Chemistry II: Lab. 1 Hour. [TCCN: CHEM 2125]

CHEM 2323. Organic Chemistry I: Lecture. 3 Hours. [TCCN: CHEM 2323]

Students study the chemical bonding and structure of organic molecules, emphasizing functional group reactions, syntheses, reaction mechanisms, nomenclature, and isomerism. Offered Fall, Spring, Summer I.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411 and CHEM 1412.

CHEM 2325. Organic Chemistry II: Lecture. 3 Hours. [TCCN: CHEM 2325]

Students expand their understanding of organic chemistry by studying the reactions, mechanisms, and syntheses of a broader range of functional groups, with an emphasis on complex transformations and multistep synthesis. Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer II.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, and prior credit for or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 2123.

CHEM 2401. Quantitative Analysis. 4 Hours.

Students apply the fundamental principles of quantitative analysis, including acid-base, complexometric, precipitation, and redox titrations, solution equilibria, and spectrophotometric methods. Laboratory exercises involve volumetric procedures and colorimetric analysis in a four-hour laboratory. Prerequisite laboratory components must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences, or student must obtain consent of the department. Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer.

CHEM 3339. Biochemistry II. 3 Hours.

Students examine the bioenergetics of metabolic pathways and processes, focusing on the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Students explore the interrelationships among metabolic pathways and the regulation of metabolism. Offered Spring.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325, CHEM 2125 and CHEM 3438.

CHEM 3367. Inorganic Chemistry. 3 Hours.

Students study general principles of inorganic chemistry using a descriptive and practical approach, emphasizing periodic relationships of elements, bonding, reactions and synthesis of inorganic compounds, and acid-base chemistry. Offered Fall and Spring.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411 and CHEM 1412.

CHEM 3368. Environmental Chemistry. 3 Hours.

Students examine the chemical principles underlying air, water, and soil pollution, focusing on gas-phase radical reactions, light absorption by atmospheric components, solution chemistry of freshwater and saltwater systems, and the mobility and chemistry of metal components in soils. Offered Spring, even years.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2401, CHEM 2323 and CHEM 2325 (or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 2325).

CHEM 3438. Biochemistry I. 4 Hours.

Students study the chemistry and functions of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, and vitamins, including enzyme kinetics, digestion and absorption mechanisms, and biological buffers. Laboratory exercises are conducted in a four-hour lab. Prerequisite laboratory components must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences or student must obtain consent of department. Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer (10-week session).

CHEM 4001. Directed Study In Chemistry. 1 Hour.

Students engage in independent, individualized study under faculty supervision, allowing advanced exploration of chemistry topics. Variable Credit (1–3).
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 2325 and approval of department chair.

CHEM 4088. Special Topics in Chemistry. 1-4 Hours.

Students explore an identified area of chemistry not covered in detail by other upper-level courses. This course may be repeated for credit if the topics vary. Variable Credit (1 to 4).
Prerequisite: Approval of department chair.

CHEM 4100. Professional Communication in Chemistry. 1 Hour.

Students learn to navigate and interpret the chemical literature and prepare and present research-based seminar talks—either on current literature or their own research—in a format consistent with American Chemical Society standards. Offered Fall and Spring.
Prerequisite: Prior credit or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 4440.

CHEM 4260. Advanced Chemistry Lab. 2 Hours.

Students conduct in-depth experiments requiring sophisticated synthetic and analytical techniques in organic, inorganic, or analytical chemistry. Prerequisite laboratory components, except CHEM 4448 which may be computational, must be supervised in-person or student must obtain consent of department.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325, CHEM 2125, CHEM 2401, CHEM 4448, and CHEM 4440.

CHEM 4327. Polymer Chemistry. 3 Hours.

Students examine reactions, synthesis, and mechanisms of polymerization processes as well as molecular weight distributions and structure/property relationships of polymers. Offered Fall.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325 and CHEM 2125.

CHEM 4367. Advanced Inorganic Chemistry. 3 Hours.

Students study the properties of atoms and ions, bonding theory and molecular structure, acid-base theory, reactions of inorganic compounds, nonaqueous solvents, and coordination chemistry, with emphasis on underlying theoretical concepts. Offered Spring.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325, CHEM 2125, and CHEM 4448.

CHEM 4380. Forensic Chemistry. 3 Hours.

Students examine key aspects of chemistry as applied to forensic investigations, emphasizing the validity and reliability of results. Students evaluate techniques and methods for selecting appropriate analytical approaches to address various forensic questions. Offered Spring.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325, CHEM 2125, CHEM 4448, CHEM 4440, and CHEM 4367 (or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 4367); MATH 1420 and MATH 1430.

CHEM 4395. Undergraduate Research In Chemistry. 3 Hours.

This course acquaints the senior student with techniques used in simple research problems. Departmental approval required. Prerequisite laboratory components must be supervised in-person experiences in a laboratory or student must obtain consent of department.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325, and CHEM 2125.

CHEM 4440. Instrumental Analytical Chemistry. 4 Hours.

Students study spectrophotometry, separation techniques, and mass spectrometry, including computer application in the modern laboratory, ultraviolet and visible absorption, atomic absorption, flame emission, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy, infrared absorption, and gas and liquid chromatography. Students gain hands-on experience using these instruments in a four-hour laboratory. Prerequisite laboratory components must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences, or student must obtain consent of the department. Offered Fall.

CHEM 4441. Methods for Environmental and Industrial Analyses. 4 Hours.

Students examine the principles and philosophy of modern instrumental methods used in environmental and industrial analyses. Topics may include quality control and assurance, good laboratory practices, waste minimization and elimination, safe laboratory operation, ISO standards, EPA methodology, and statistical data analysis. Offered Spring.
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in CHEM 2401, CHEM 2323,CHEM 2325, and CHEM 3368.

CHEM 4443. Structural Spectroscopic Methods. 4 Hours.

Students survey spectroscopic and spectrometric methods for elucidating chemical structures, with emphasis on the identification of unknown compounds. Methods include ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Students explore the strengths, complementary nature, and utility of each method, with focus on structural determination. Offered Spring, even years.

CHEM 4448. Physical Chemistry I. 4 Hours.

Students develop an understanding of the foundations of spectroscopic methods (radio-frequency, microwave, infrared, Raman, UV-visible, and X-ray) from first principles using an atomistic point of view. Four-hour laboratory. Prerequisite laboratory components must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences, or student must obtain consent of the department. Offered Fall and Spring.
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of C in CHEM 1411, CHEM 1412, CHEM 2323, CHEM 2123, CHEM 2325, CHEM 2125, MATH 1420, MATH 1430 and one year of physics.

CHEM 4449. Physical Chemistry II. 4 Hours.

Students explore the developments of thermochemistry, phase diagrams, and equilibria by connecting the statistical mechanics of quantum states to the macroscopic observations of thermodynamics. Four-hour laboratory. Prerequisite lab components, except CHEM 4448 which can be computational, must be completed as in-person, supervised laboratory experiences, or student must obtain consent of the department.
