COUN 3321. Introduction to the Helping Relationship. 3 Hours.

Students reflect on their motivations, needs, and goals as a human services worker. They engage in a community service-learning project to explore the nature of the helping relationship in a practical setting. Students also practice professional attitudes, dispositions, and skills needed to develop helping relationships. Course Equivalents: COUN 2331 .

COUN 3322. Career Development. 3 Hours.

This course will help students explore a lifelong plan for career development. Students will use real life assessments to determine aptitudes, interests and values related to careers. Students will learn how to utilize on campus and internet resources to develop resumes, portfolios and practice job interviewing skills. Activities in this course are designed to give students an advantage for entering the job market. Course Equivalents: COUN 2332 .

COUN 3331. Introduction to Principles Of Counseling. 3 Hours.

Students discuss and demonstrate comprehension of the counseling profession including professional issues, ethics, history, credentialing, professional associations, and various roles and settings counselors work within. Students demonstrate knowledge professional counseling identity, the value of the counseling relationship, and theoretical frameworks used to conceptualize the relationship. Students engage in a service-learning project related to helping professions and settings.

COUN 3332. Therapeutic Play Skills. 3 Hours.

Students discuss therapeutic play as a child’s language for socio-emotional processing and different theoretical approaches to understanding child’s play. They identify forms of therapeutic play expressions (e.g., toys, art, music, games, ropes or cooperative activities, animals, sandtray, etc.) as applied in various settings (e.g., schools, hospitals, child advocacy centers, etc.).

COUN 4088. Special Topics in Counseling. 3 Hours.

Students critically read and discuss current topics in the human services field. Students apply skills, as appropriate to the topic. Content varies depending on emerging trends and interests.

COUN 4089. Independent Study in Counseling. 1-3 Hours.

Students participate in faculty guided exploration of a specific human services topic that aligns with the student’s academic and professional goals. Students contract with the supervising instructor for the course learning objectives, learning activities, and methods of evaluation for activities students complete in the course to earn credit. Topics may vary. Course Equivalents: COUN 4387 .

COUN 4379. Wellness Counseling. 3 Hours.

This course is an introduction to the history of wellness and the contributions of various cultures to the wellness concept. Several models and theories for the practice of counseling are addressed. Behavior change models and current research related to specific wellness domains will be explored with a focus for working with clients from a wellness perspective.
