Teaching Field Major/Education Minor

Leading to Certification in the Secondary Grades

Candidates for teaching certificates in grades 7-12 will major in the teaching field of their choice. The certification advisor, usually a professor in the major department, will provide guidance regarding the degree plan and other requirements. Within the College of Education, the School of Teaching and Learning will provide guidance regarding securing certification and professional education coursework. Additional Degree Requirements for Secondary Certification Candidates

  • English (ENGL 1301, ENGL 1302 and ENGL Literature [2000 level or higher]) (Core Curriculum Component Areas I and IV)
  • Math (Core Curriculum Component Area II)
  • Science (Core Curriculum Component Area III)
  • Fine Arts (Core Curriculum Component Area IV)
  • History and Political Science (Core Curriculum Component Area V)
  • Kinesiology or accepted substitutes (Core Curriculum Component Area VI)

All secondary certification minors are:

  • required to meet the admission requirement for the Educator Preparation Program, and to maintain good standing while attending SHSU (see Admission to the Educator Preparation Programs- Admission Standards);
  • required to apply for the secondary methods block (CISE 4364, and CISE 4379)
  • required to apply for student teaching (contact edu_ofe@shsu.edu for student teaching information).

Note: The above requirements represent a sequence of mandatory checkpoints.  Candidates must be recommended at each checkpoint to progress through the program.

Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction 4+1 Program

Applicants seeking admission to the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction 4+1 Program must submit the following:

  • 4+1 Program Application through TK20
  • Current undergraduate transcript demonstrating a minimum 3.15 overall GPA or last 60 SCH.
  • Three Reference Forms (at least two from SHSU professors)
  • Writing Sample

Admission to the 4+1 program is competitive and the number of available positions is limited. The top candidates from the initial application review will progress to a group interview and must also submit:

  • a video recording of themselves conducting a 20-30 minute lesson in a K-12 classroom

  • an in-person writing sample

Before a formal offer of admission will be issued, the applicant must supply evidence that he or she has passed both the appropriate content TExES and PPR TExES certification exams.
