Students examine World War I from its European origins to its emergence as a global conflict. Topics may include the formation of military and political alliances; the emerging role of the state; the role of industrial economies in waging war; home front cultures and societies; major land campaigns of the Eastern and Western Fronts; the war at sea; the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, which emerged out of the war; and the complexity of the peacemaking process.
