Transfer Articulation: Dance
The Department of Dance at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) proudly presents a joint program allowing students to complete the Associate in Arts Degree and utilize the majority of courses to complete the Baccalaureate Degree in Fine Arts/ Dance at SHSU. Admission to the BFA in Dance program is contingent on the student passing one of three dance auditions scheduled on campus at SHSU each year. A minor in dance is also offered, which does not require an audition. Students are encouraged to seek advice from Academic Advisors to ensure maximum transferability of courses between institutions. For guidance specific to preparing for the BFA dance curriculum, please contact the SHSU Dance Department.

Admission to the BFA Degree in Dance at SHSU is selective. Prospective majors must audition no less than one academic year prior to anticipated enrollment in the BFA program. Auditions are scheduled throughout the year for both program admission and scholarship consideration. Those who cannot attend the scheduled auditions may submit a video for admission consideration. Students may audition a maximum of three times.
The BFA requires 78 hours of dance and 42 hours of core classes. The degree does not include a required minor, although many Dance majors choose to complete one. Students must earn grades of C or better in all Dance courses.
Applicants to the Dance Program are encouraged to contact the department office for advising (936-294-1875). We recognize direct mappings of Dance course numbers between institutions are not always possible. Flexibility will be exercised to maximize transfer credit. Students seeking credit for courses not specifically mapped below should contact an SHSU academic advisor to verify transfer compatibility prior to registration at other institutions.

Field of Study
Sam Houston State University supports the State of Texas Fields of Study.
The Core Curriculum at Sam Houston State University (to be used by all incoming students as of fall 2014) contains 42 semester credit hours, encompassing nine component areas. Each component area has a minimum credit hour requirement and a selection of specific courses that may be used to satisfy the requirement. The Core Curriculum details Sam Houston State University courses and their Texas Common Course Number (TCCN) equivalents for college transfer students which comprise SHSU’s core curriculum.
Many SHSU disciplines including the sciences, business, and education require specific courses from the SHSU core as degree specific graduation requirements. To minimize cost and time to complete degree requirements always select SHSU/transfer core courses specified as degree requirements in your intended major. If you have not decided on a major, select core courses supporting your intended area of academic concentration.
Prior to enrolling in core classes, students are encouraged to review specific degree requirements for their major. Selection of major-specified core courses reduces the total number of hours required for graduation.
If you do not see a Texas Common Course Number (TCCN) mapping a specific core course to your transfer institution, please go to Transfer Course Equivalency Guide and select your institution from the drop-down menu. The result will list all currently mapped transfer courses from your institution to SHSU courses.
