Master of Education in School Counseling
The Master of Education in School Counseling is a CACREP-accredited degree designed specifically for students who want to work toward certification as a school counselor in Texas. It requires completion of forty-eight hours of graduate credit and may meet academic requirements for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). The program is designed to comply with existing Texas Education Agency standards for professional certification, but students are encouraged to check the state licensing rules for changes in the requirements. All students must take the comprehensive examination during Supervised Practicum (COUN 6376). Students must be enrolled in the university when taking the comprehensive examination and when applying for graduation.
Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Education in Counseling must submit the following directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions:
- Graduate Application
- Application fee
- Apply to the School Counselor Preparation Program if seeking Texas School Counselor certification (Instructions )
- Pay the $55 Texas Education Accountability System for Educator Preparation Programs Fee (paid to the TEA as required by TAC 229.9.7 ) if seeking Texas School Counselor certification
- Official transcript from the baccalaureate degree granting institution
- Official GRE scores (verbal and quantitative) with writing section (no older than five years)
- 3.0 G.P.A. requirement
- Three Reference Forms:
- one from a current employer/supervisor
- one from a former professor, certified school counselor or licensed counselor, marriage and family therapist, MSW, or psychologist
- one from someone other than a family member
- Essay
- Face-to-Face interview
- Service Record (ASEP reporting) - submitted through TK20
- Valid Teacher Certificate (ASEP reporting) -submitted through TK20
