COUN 5334. Differential Diagnosis Assessment. 3 Hours.

Through case study applications, the course prepares students to evaluate biopsychosocial and observational data via case study applications to conduct a differential diagnosis of mental health challenges experienced across the lifespan within the client’s developmental and sociocultural context, utilizing the most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Diagnostic criteria, features, prevalence, risk and prognostic factors, functional consequences, differential diagnostic considerations, common comorbidities, and development and course of diagnoses under each diagnostic category are studied. Students learn how diagnoses impact social, school/occupational, and interpersonal functioning, and how to determine level of severity based on functional impairments to inform treatment planning.
