Graduate Certificate in Political Science

The number of Texas high school students enrolling in dual credit and advanced-placement courses are increasing dramatically, due in part to recent legislation that make it easier for high school administrators to offer students such courses. High school instructors who teach dual credit and advanced-placement courses must fulfill the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) credential requirements. Specifically, each instructor must hold a master’s degree in the relevant subject area or a master’s degree and 18 hours of graduate coursework in that subject area. The Graduate Certificate in Political Science provides instructors with the opportunity to obtain the 18 hours of graduate coursework needed to meet the SACSCOC credential requirements.

Those wishing to pursue the certificate should hold a graduate degree from an accredited college or university and submit:

  • An application with accompanying application fee to the Sam Houston State University Office of Graduate Studies;
  • Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education, showing all degrees conferred,Including the qualifying Master's degree;
  • Two letters of recommendation;
  • An academic writing sample; and
  • A letter of interest.
