Master of Education in Special Education

This 36-hour degree plan is designed for those holding a valid teaching certificate.  The degree plan originates in the Department of Language, Literacy, and Special Populations. The candidate must successfully complete a departmental comprehensive examination. Candidates must be enrolled in coursework during the semester they take comprehensive examinations.

To be regularly admitted to the graduate school, applicants must submit to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

  1. Graduate Application
  2. Application fee
  3. Apply  to the Educational Diagnostician Preparation Program if seeking Texas Educational Diagnostician certification (Instructions )
  4. Pay the $55 Texas Education Accountability System for Educator Preparation Programs Fee  (paid to the TEA as required by TAC 229.9.7 ) if seeking Texas Educational Diagnostician certification
  5. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, both undergraduate and graduate (Note: A minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate and graduate work is expected)
  6. Two Recommendation Forms
  7. Writing Sample
  8. Copy of applicant's Teaching Certificate
  9. Official GRE  scores, if GPA in last 60 hours is below a 3.0

NOTE: Candidates may be permitted to enroll for one semester while their admission file is incomplete.

Applicants with completed files are reviewed for regular admission by graduate faculty in each program area and are selected by faculty based on information in the completed file.

Students with a Master Degree in a related field who complete the above courses will be eligible to sit for the TExEx Educational Diagnostician Certification Exam.
