Program Description

The MA program in History at Sam Houston State University prepares students to read, analyze, and write about the past in a way that is meaningful today. In keeping with this philosophy, the program offers a unique experience, which blends the best of traditional seminar classes with the latest in online instruction. Students will find a broad-based education incorporating in-depth studies of American and World history, immersion in the latest historiographical theories, and training in advanced research methods. The program serves students interested in education, public history, and civil service, as well as those aspiring to a Ph.D.

Admissions

Students seeking admission to the graduate program in History must meet the following requirements and submit all documents to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

  1. Graduate Application
  2. Application fee
  3. Official transcripts of all college-level work, including the transcript that shows the date the undergraduate degree was conferred
  4. GRE scores
  5. Two letters of recommendation that discuss the applicant’s suitability for graduate study
  6. A writing sample of scholarly work

A holistic review of each student’s application file will be completed on a competitive basis.

Degree Requirements

After completing the necessary work for a Master's degree in History, each student must pass both a written and an oral comprehensive exam.  Students should review the information on the History Department's website about the comprehensive exam process .
